Training opportunities are being offered statewide to adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities and their family members to increase their understanding of Supported Decision Making (SDM), also known as the Dustin Gary Act of the 2020 Louisiana legislative session, and other legal options available in Louisiana.
According to Reynolds (2002), Schmidt (1995) and Uekert & Van Duizend (2011), the number of interdicted individuals who have a developmental disability has tripled since 1955. Supported Decision-Making helps preserve an adult with a disability’s autonomy and independence while still providing the person with support from their supporters, family, friends and community when making certain life decisions. With the passing of the Dustin Gary Act, Louisiana residents will need in-depth education, training and technical assistance.
Take advantage of this incredible opportunity to receive valuable information on this new least restrictive option now available in Louisiana! In addition to the training, you’ll receive a detailed SDM handbook with tips and strategies and two (2) selected individuals with developmental disabilities will be mentored through the entire supported decision-making process. Each training session is free to attend, but you must register. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, all trainings will be offered via Zoom.
These training events are provided through a partnership between the Council and The Arc of Louisiana.
A list of upcoming trainings and links to registration can be found below. As additional trainings are scheduled, the Council’s web-page will be updated with dates, times, locations and registration details.
