Today, the U.S. House of Representatives passed a new budget. This budget includes the biggest cuts ever to Medicaid and food assistance in our country’s history. The bill now goes to the President, who said he will sign it into law.
What the New Federal Budget Includes
Here’s what the bill does:
- Cuts more than $1 trillion from Medicaid (health care for people with low incomes and disabilities)
- Cuts $300 billion from SNAP (also known as food stamps)
- Takes away billions of dollars from programs that help with:
- Health care
- Food
- In-home and community services for people who need support
These cuts will hurt many people, including those with disabilities, families, older adults, women, and children.
Right now, we don’t know exactly how this will affect Louisiana’s service delivery system. As soon as we get more information, we will share it with you.
What we do know is this: we must work closely with state policymakers, departments, and partners to make sure people with disabilities still get the support they need.
We know this is not the news many of you were hoping for. But we want to thank you for speaking up. Your stories and advocacy made a difference and showed your strength.
We’re in this together—and we will keep moving forward.
