The Louisiana Department of Health’s Office of Intellectual and Developmental Disability Supports (OIDD) has released a guidance document about the Screening for Urgency of Need, also called the SUN.

The SUN process is used to determine how urgently a person with an intellectual or developmental disability may need services.

The new guidance explains:

  • The purpose of the SUN
  • How a person’s level of urgency is determined
  • How Medicaid State Plan services are considered
  • How to request a review or reconsideration of a SUN decision

The guidance may be helpful for people with disabilities, families, legal representatives, service providers and others who want to better understand the SUN process.
