Direct Support Professional Recognition Campaign

The Council acknowledges the valuable work done by direct support professionals across the State of Louisiana.  A direct support professional (DSP) is a person who assists an individual with a developmental disability to lead a self-directed life and become an active, contributing member of their community.  DSPs assist in may ways, such as, helping with activities of daily living, presenting opportunities to learn and develop new skills, empowering individuals to exercise their independence, and encouraging attitudes and behaviors that enhance community inclusion.

Applying to Become a Direct Support Professional

Individuals interesting in applying to become a direct support professional should contact local home and community-based service providers and inquire about employment opportunities.  A list of providers and their contact information can be accessed on the Louisiana Department of Health (LDH) website by following the steps below:

  1.  Click here to go to the LDH provider webpage
  2.  Scroll to the bottom of the page and click your region on the map
  3.  Check the box next to “Personal Care Attendant [MR/DD]”
  4.  Click “Browse Providers”

Note:  This will pull up a list of all the providers in your area of the state in alphabetical order.  Some areas have dozens of providers, so don’t limit your search to just the first few on the list.
